Fort Richardson State Park is located on the outskirts of Jacksboro, Texas. My family's first home in Texas (well, the Campsey side anyway) was in Jack County during the 1880's. We will have annual family reunions in the town and I have many relatives who still live in and around Jacksboro. So, when Sharon and I decided to go to the family reunion and to camp during the trip, Fort Richardson SP was an obvious choice.
Finding the park was simple as it was clearly marked. We stopped into the visitor center to find a friendly staff (come to think of it, we almost always find friendly staffs at our great state parks) who quickly checked us in and got us a campsite. They also suggested we try the fishing as folks have had great luck in the past several weeks and have caught good catfish and bass there. Alas, we still did not bring our fishing poles. Sigh.
We set up our campsite and decided to relax a bit before we took our little walk along the creek and go see the historic fort.
Not only was the park set up for a great walk through the old fort and its grounds, it also has the Lost Creek Reservoir State Trailway, a hike, bike and equestrian 10-mile hike. We didn't take the entire walk but enjoyed a short hike along the creek.
We also enjoyed the fort itself. If you are interested in reading some historical information (the monthly logs for the fort), you can see the Monthly Returns from 1866 to 1878 on my website. Otherwise, I totally recommend you get off your butt and travel to north Texas and go see this historic fort! Most of the time, this fort was manned by the Buffalo Soldiers.
After visiting the Fort and looking around the area, we were taking our time before lights out and saw one beautiful sunset.
We hope you decide to visit this great park. We enjoyed every bit of our time there and will visit it again.
I rate Fort Richardson State Park, Historic Site, and Lost Creek Reservoir State Trailway an easy three campers!
