Looking for a short holiday weekend camping spot on short notice, we were hoping on Garner or some other park. Fortunately, Seminole Canyon State Park (SCSP) had openings where none of our other choices did. So, in effect, this was the only choice for Memorial Day weekend.
Disclaimer: My Sweetie was ill the morning we left and never fully recuperated during our stay at this park.
The drive to the park became a journey. We crossed over hundreds of acres of burned land, all destroyed by the raging wildfires most of Texas has experienced this year. Crossing huge ranches, we noticed how some parts were virtually untouched by fire while other parts were burned down completely. Eventually, we drove past a river, with water(!), and experienced a complete change in the foliage; seeing large groves of oaks and pecans along with more green than we had seen in months.
Turning west at Comstock, we decided a stop at the local shop for ice would be in our best interest since the temperature was already topping 105° F. A few short minutes later and we arrived at SCSP.
Getting our campsite was easy; hardly half of the sites were filled. The good news is that we actually got a pull-through for our PuP. The bad news is that we were at the top of the hill with no shade and no wind break. I will admit we were fairly close to both the toilets and the grey water disposal.
Putting the PuP up in 15 mph winds and 105° heat became a real chore; especially with my Sweetie in no shape to work hard. I couldn't make her stay in the truck with the A/C on nor could I make her rest. Eventually, we got the PuP up and got into the shade.
We weren't able to take the trail from the campground to the Rio Grande so I can't really rate that one. We did take the trip into the canyon to view the Indian drawings, with the guide, though. That short hike was mostly down to the canyon, look at some of the drawings (no where near ALL of the drawings), and then climb up out of the canyon.
One day we did take an excursion to Judge Roy Bean's Saloon and Courthouse in Langtry, TX. That was a hoot and a great way to get out of the sun for a while. We then headed over to Del Rio, TX (across from Ciudad Acuña, Mexico) to visit a fine dining establishment and to tour a vineyard.
During the night, the wind speed approached 45 mph in gusts and constantly around 30 mph. Our little PuP was buffeted quite a bit and kept us from getting too much sleep.
Eventually, due to the winds, excessive heat, and my Sweetie's illness, we left a day early to return home.
Would I go back to SCSP? I think, yes. I would rather go in a cooler time (maybe October or February) when the winds are not as ferocious - and, of course, when my Sweetie isn't ill!
With our tough experience with Seminole Canyon State Park, I can only rate this one camper. But I am willing to try it again.
