So, we decided that since we had such a great time last year, we would go back in 2010.
Wow. Again, St. Patrick's Day in San Antonio is such a blend of Irish/Hispanic heritage that I'm still amazed at it.
We first got into SA to check into our hotel, The Menger! Another great room with a balcony overlooking the sacred Alamo. From there, onto the Riverwalk to see all the young Air Force guys and gals having their liberty day from recruit training!
We headed to La Villita and found a great little tent that served Irish beer and the Smithwick's ale was phenomenal. Spent some time looking at the shops (...again...) before we decided it was time to eat. We headed to a Tex-Mex place where I decided I needed to sample the local margarita mix.
By the time 6 o'clock came around, we had made our way around the entire Luminaria loop to find all of the stages and had settled down to watch the opening ceremony. We were near the stage and the volunteers gave us some 'sticks' to use when the mayor finished speaking. There was lots of confetti in the sticks so all we had to do was 'flick' the sticks and the paper would shoot out! When the time came, dozens of folk (including at least one little girl about 2 years old!) 'flicked!' their sticks to shower the stage and surrounding area with confetti! What a blast! The local TV crews (and at least one film crew from Austin City Limits) captured our 'showering' of paper!
After the ceremony, there were six hours of music, dancing, poetry reading (dddduuuulllllll), and asunder to keep everyone busy. Again, a great time!
Seeing as I am getting too old to party ALL night, Sharon and I uploaded a few Facebook pictures and decided to crash around 10 (or was it 11?). Whatever it was, we had a long day and a wonderful day.
This was the third year for the Luminaria and I hope it has many more. If you can, plan your trip to San Antonio so you are there for this event.......
