A Journey to the Middle Ages

So, Nick, Sharon, and I headed out from the house around 10 a.m. on Friday past so we could get to Waxahachie before it got too late. Driving eastbound on I-20 at 70 mph, I was just getting into a groove when Sharon - out of the blue - said, "I forgot my shirt! I won't be able to wear my gear without it. Please turn around and let's go back."

For those of you who are familiar with the Interstate highway system, you know that it has limited access and, sometimes, the next exit can be miles away. For those of you who are familiar with the Interstate highway system in West, by God, Texas, you will also know that it can be 80 miles before you find an exit.  Fortunately, I only had to go to Stanton, Texas (home of 3000 happy souls and a few old soreheads) before I turned around.

Anyway, the delay turned about to be about 1.25 hours.

Got to our hotel and checked in. Decided to head out to a Mexican restaurant. That was a disaster. The tortilla soup sucked. The beef and bean burrito sucked. The waiter sucked as we had no refills on water or iced tea. The rest of the meal pretty much sucked. Bland, non-seasoned, boring food, lack of service, loud crying children, -- overall, rotten.

The next day we spent at the Renaissance Faire. Great time. Got to see real jousting where they actually beat the crap out of each other with the jousting poles. One guy was knocked off his horse and the other guy was stunned so much he had several people help him get off his horse.

So, the faire was outstanding and really one of the best I've ever attended. I'd say more than 60% of the people attending were wearing garb of some sort. Really nice!

It was a bit warm but not as hot as I'd expected. Regardless, Sharon was trussed up in her dress and was getting a little overheated. Eventually, we stopped next to a place selling bodice coolers! These are simply a metal container filled with crushed ice and topped with a decorative cork. Bought one, gave it to Sharon, she slipped it in 'twixt her bosum, and suddenly, she said, "THAT'S COLD!" But it did the trick and helped cool her down.

The Faire runs a few more weeks (weekends only) so you might want to stop by!
